Tears of Christ
Although Jesus Christ was fully God, He was also fully human. He experienced sorrow and shed tears. He cares about us too. The Bible records some of those experiences—the tears of Christ. For instance, as Jesus was heading to Jerusalem to take the death penalty for our sins, he mourned over the people of the city, weeping about them. It is recorded in The Bible as follows:
When he came near, he saw the city and wept over it, saying, “If you, even you, had known today the things which belong to your peace! But now, they are hidden from your eyes. Luke 19:41-42
The sorrow and sufferings of Christ for us were predicted long before He took on human flesh. By inspiration of God, Isaiah writes as follows:
Who has believed our message?
To whom has Yahweh’s arm been revealed?
For he grew up before him as a tender plant,
and as a root out of dry ground.
He has no good looks or majesty.
When we see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
He was despised
and rejected by men,
a man of suffering
and acquainted with disease.
He was despised as one from whom men hide their face;
and we didn’t respect him.
Surely he has borne our sickness
and carried our suffering;
yet we considered him plagued,
struck by God, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions.
He was crushed for our iniquities.
The punishment that brought our peace was on him;
and by his wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53:1-5
For those who take Jesus up on His offer of forgiveness, a better outcome is predicted than that of early Jerusalem, as follows:
I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth have passed away, and the sea is no more. I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband. I heard a loud voice out of heaven saying, “Behold, God’s dwelling is with people, and he will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away.” Revelation 21:1-4
Do you see the tears of Christ? Do you care? Are you His?
